OUTLINE Challenges New initiatives Update on Climate extremes, MEDARE and Climate Watch Recommendations GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva 14-17 October 2008

Monitoring of Climate Variability and Changes Trends, global and regional climate variability, and extreme climate events constitute an important driving force for an increased awareness of Climate Observations and Climate Data GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva 14-17 October 2008

Main outcomes 1. The workshop was a very good beginning for regional cooperation in a climatologically important and understudied region of the planet. 2. Workshop attendees have generously made all the indices calculate for these station time series available for the international research community at the ETCCDIs Web site http://cccma.seos.uvic.ca/ETCCDI 3. In a region with limited international exchange of data this is a significant advance 4. Opens up possibilities of many additional lines of research, such establishing links between climate and agricultural production or ecosystem responses. GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva 14-17 October 2008

Review Article, BAMS September 2008 GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva 14-17 October 2008

Update on MEDARE Endorsed by EC-60 Web Site was set up and a web Portal for Data Inventory is under construction Working Groups Steering group

GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva 14-17 October 2008

WMO Workshops on Climate Watch Help NMHSs to Implement Climate watch system to contribute in preventing climate related hazards –floods, windstorms, droughts, Heat waves, Landslides, etc Focus Period: 2008-2011 First one in ECUADOR, 8-11 December 2008, WMO,CIIFEN, ESPOL (UV), NMHS in RA-III GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva 14-17 October 2008

RECOMMENDATIONS III.1 See what CBS-GCOS lead centres could do to further encourage all CLIMAT stations to report on regular monthly basis and possibly creation of more CLIMAT reporting stations III.2 Linkage between some GCOS and WMO(WCP) regional activities GCOS Steering Committee meeting, Geneva 14-17 October 2008
