AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 P803 “European IP Testbed” Magnus Krampell EURESCOM Project Supervisor

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 “European IP Testbed” P716 Pre-study (July - December, 97) P803Set-up phase (January - March, 98) P803Impl. phase (April - December, 98) A new Call for Expression of Interest (CEI) may be issued in end of March/beginning of April Start Project in May/June, 1998 Also cover proposal from P702 P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Project Rationale and Objectives –Many PNOs are building IP networks using state-of-the-art technology –Much effort goes into testing the latest technologies –It is difficult to create realistic testing environments …so... +Create heterogeneous Test Network together +Collaborate on tests that would otherwise be duplicated +Give the PNOs a possibility to experiment with and select among the multitude of IP “standards” by providing a testing framework P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 A European Experimental Network EU 5th Framework: “The objective would be to facilitate the supply of trans- European interconnections….imply an upgrading the existing 34 Mb/s via 622 Mb/s to Gigabits/s, including support for different levels of ‘Quality of Service’…” Is this the call for Internet 3? (See next News Letter!) Much research is still needed! - The “European IP Testbed” could be the place for such research EU TEN-Telecom issues calls for proposals (15/1-15/4) This Project could pave way for proposal next year? P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Tests to be performed (1/5) A IPv6 testing... 1) ‘Basic’ interoperability –Migration : moving from IPv4 to IPv6 Migration scenarios Addressing Now - IPv6 in IPv4 tunnels (6BONE) Later - IPv4 in IPv6 tunnels! Scalability –Heterogeneous systems compatibility testing Two systems Many systems networked, end-to-end testing P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Tests to be performed (2/5) A IPv6 testing... 2) ‘Advanced’ features –Autoconfiguration –Mobility –New Routing Protocols, e.g. RIPv6 BGP4+ –Addressing Formats –Flow monitoring –Multicasting P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Tests to be performed (3/5) B Quality of Service testing... 1) Class of Service schemes –Parameters / values ? –Methods to ensure Class of Service –Selection / Validation of feasible solutions e.g. Cisco Netflow P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Tests to be performed (4/5) B Quality of Service testing... 2)Bandwidth Reservation schemes - RSVP –Scalability –Flow Aggregation –Set-up delay –Stability / End-to-End availability –Performance Verification –Management - RSVP MIBs for SNMP? P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Tests to be performed (5/5) C Network Architecture testing... End-to-end performance provided by different layers – (e.g. IP over ATM, IP switching, TAG switching) Interoperability between different network technologies –(e.g. Functionality, Interfaces definition,Admission control, Resource reservation) Stability of products –(e.g redundancy, fail-over mechanisms) è Suitability for differentiated QoS-provisioning? P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Connectivity EURESCOM N-ISDN Multiplexer –2 Mb/s ISDN PRI to EURESCOM HQ –Router with multiplexing capabilities –Call-back function using D-channel signalling. –The 30 channels can be divided between connected sites, i.e. 2 sites can use 15 B-channels each (1 Mb/s) or 7 sites can use 4 B-channels (256 kb/s) each. –4 B-channels means 2 * ISDN BRI (P715) P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Connectivity P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Connectivity Broad Band connections: –Leased lines (on-demand connectivity) bilateral agreements between participants connections will NOT be free…. –DANTE (TEN-34 currently and QUANTUM later) QUANTUM = TEN-155 Connections will NOT be free…. P803

AIMS Workshop Heidelberg, 9-11 March 1998 Conclusions Good idea of what needs to be done… Research IS needed in this area... “Restart” of Project.. For information contact: Magnus Krampell +49 6221 989 381 krampell@eurescom.de P803
