Traits of Reading Review GOAL: We will review Comprehension and Interpretation We will achieve this goal using a note- taking organizer.

Three Levels Synthesis Interpretation Comprehension

Comprehension Reading the Lines Comprehension Interpretation Synthesis

Comprehension WHAT it is… Identifying the plot, characters, and themes of the text. Predicting and identifying “turning moments” of the text. Summarizing and paraphrasing with purpose.

Comprehension is like… …reading the lines because we are looking for information which is included in the text.

Comprehension WHY it is important… Comprehension skills help us build a foundation upon which we can build meaning! Comprehension

To summarize our review… What it is Identifying, Predicting, and Summarizing basic information from the text Comprehension Reading the Lines Why it is important It builds a foundation for creating meaning What it is like… Reading the lines

Interpretation Reading Between the Lines Interpretation Comprehension: Reading the Lines Synthesis

Interpretation WHAT it is… Identify problems, gaps, and questions in the text Analyze the text for clues to help explain the problems, gaps, and questions in a text Use context to connect analytical explanations to a “bigger picture”

…reading between the lines. When we interpret, we “fill gaps” and blend what is said in the story + what is implied Interpretation is like… New Meaning

Interpretation WHY it is important… Interpretation skills let us do things with the text beyond what is written on the page! Interpretation allows us to take what the text says + what the text does not say +our own understanding to make new meaning.

To summarize our review… What it is Identifying gaps and questions in the text and analyzing them to create new meaning Why it is important It lets us create new meaning from a text What it is like… Reading between the lines Comprehension: Reading the Lines Interpretation

Comprehension Check Are the following questions examples of Comprehension OR Interpretation? Use your notes for help.

What is this story about? What is the setting of this story? When I apply my own background knowledge to the gaps in the text, what new meaning do I create? From what point of view is this story told? Is this a main detail of the text? What problems do I notice within the text? Comprehension! Why? Interpretation! Why? Comprehension! Why? Interpretation! Why?

Describe the setting of this story. What are the problems and gaps posed in this portion of the text? Distinguish between these two details…which one is a minor detail? Which is a main supporting detail? Pull from your background knowledge and comprehension of the text to make an inference about the motivation of this character. Summarize the main plot of this story. Analyze the problems you identified in the text using clues and evidence. Comprehension. Why? Interpretation. Why? Comprehension. Why? Interpretation. Why? Comprehension. Why? Interpretation. Why?

Traits of Reading Part 2 GOAL: We will define SYNTHESIS and see what it looks like for a reader. We will achieve this goal using a note-taking organizer.

SYNTHESIS Reading Beyond the Lines Synthesis Interpretation Reading Between the Lines Comprehension Reading the Lines

Synthesis is integrating the text, our background knowledge, and other ideas to create something new, something greater than the sum of its part Comparing and contrasting information from multiple sources (not just one!) Outline important information in the text Determine cause and effect Synthesis WHAT it is…

Order information to explain the text’s process or chronology Compare and Contrast Recognize and Describe cause-and-effect relationships Integrate personal experience, background knowledge, and/or content-area knowledge with the text Hypothesize and seek multiple sources to develop an answer whose whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Synthesis WHAT it is…

1.Assemble the ingredients 2.Combine them in a bowl 3.Bake the cake mix at an appropriate temperature for an appropriate amount of time 4.Remove when cake is done baking! Synthesis is like…Making a Cake! + ++ =

The Text Itself Our Interpretation of the text Our background and past experiences Other texts + ++ = SYNTHESIS Reading Beyond the Lines

Synthesis is integrating the text, our own experience, and other ideas to create something new. When we synthesize, we create something new that is greater than the sum of its individual parts Synthesis Why it is important… Synthesis Interpretation Reading Between the Lines

What Synthesis Questions Look Like… Compare and Contrast this character’s problems with the problems you have encountered in your own life. Order the events in a recognizable order. Compare the theme from this story with a current day situation or event. Using your comprehension of this story, hypothesize on what causes this type of situation to occur.

To summarize our NEW learning… Synthesis Interpretation Reading Between the Lines Comprehension Reading the Lines What it is Combining the text, our background knowledge, and other texts to create something greater than the sum of its parts! Why it is important It lets us create something beyond the text What it is like Making a cake OR Reading Beyond the Lines
