The Royal Latin School Sixth Form Entry September 2012 Welcome to our Open Evening!
2
Entry Criteria The entry expectations for students are: a minimum of 368 points from 8 full GCSEs including Maths and English at A*-C (where A* = 58, A = 52, B = 46 and C = 40). For information, this is equivalent to 8 Bs. (Please note that you will need higher grades if you wish to study Maths and/or English at A level) GCSE minimum levels in four AS level subjects of study as detailed in the prospectus Recommendation from your present school The course required is on offer.
3
Over-subscription Criteria Because we are usually over-subscribed by students applying from outside the school we have to have, in addition, over-subscription criteria which are as follows: Places are awarded according to the highest GCSE points score, based on the best 8 full GCSEs including Maths and English at A*-C (where A* = 58, A = 52, B = 46 and C = 40). Students with qualifications other than GCSE, such as BTEC National Certificates and Diplomas, have their equivalent points scores and these will be taken into account following their application. We usually have at least 40 places on offer (possibly more if some of our own students do not take up their places).
4
We will be making some conditional offers on the basis of your school’s reference and predicted grades. ……. And we will also reserve places for students who perform particularly well in August. A further consideration for applicants to bear in mind is that the school cannot in all situations meet their subject choices, even if applicants have high grades. It might be the case that the demand from our own students means that there are limited places in some subjects, therefore we cannot guarantee you a place even with a high score. Some flexibility in your choice of subjects could therefore be an advantage. The Good News is that……..
5
Choosing Your Course You will need to select four AS level subjects and to have some idea which of these you are likely to continue with in your second year. Students should think ahead to university course selection, and may need to be aware that certain degree courses require certain subjects at A level: For example, Architecture courses require Art A2; Psychology often requires Biology. Those considering Law and/or Psychology courses should be aware that universities do not require any previous study of either subject.
6
In order to help you decide on your final choice of subjects, In order to help you decide on your final choice of subjects, there is a section at the back of the brochure where you can find likely combinations of subjects needed for various degree courses/ careers. Please note that any reduction in students opting for specific courses or a change in staffing might mean the subject offer would have to be amended. Choosing Your Course continued…..

The Option Blocks It is important that you understand how the Sixth Form timetables are constructed: Subjects are placed in Option Blocks. All subjects within a block are taught simultaneously and this means that you must ultimately choose one subject from each of the blocks, leaving one spare block. To increase the choice of subject combinations, some subjects will appear in two or more Blocks. The Option Blocks for September 2012 are driven by the wishes of our own students and will only be available for non-RLS students on our website once RLS students have applied and courses allocated.
