12 Korea Information Society Development Institute 12 U-City U-City projects in collaboration the central government has: made R&D investments in U-city integrated platform and construction, ICT fusion technology development worked to prevent overlapping investment between ministries and local governments local governments are providing: various ubiquitous service infrastructures the private sector is taking its part to promote the industry: by developing and providing diverse ubiquitous services brief overview Hwaseong Dongtan, the first smart city in Korea, constructed in Sep. 2008 39 local governments, 52 U-city projects U-Safety, U-Environment, U-Transportation, and U-Media are the services provided in Hwaseong Dongtan U-city

14 Korea Information Society Development Institute 14 Information Network Village AIM: providing local residents with access to information HOW: by establishing broadband in rural areas launch in May 2001 now: 363 information network villages across the nation What is INV? offer an opportunity to access information for residents in farming or fishing villages by laying an information foundation such as broadband network, community information centers or web sites connecting consumers and producers to promote the sales of specialties, agricultural and marine products sales of agricultural or marine products: $13,394,000 farm tourism: $7,531,000 (2010)

15 Korea Information Society Development Institute 15 Information Network Village Korean broadband establishment project the government: focused on attracting private investment through facility- based competition the private sector: led the investment and development of broadband Why Important? reduced the information gap of rural areas with cities played a key role in improving the quality of life of residents in farming and fishing villages in promoting active involvement of local residents by minimizing marketing margins through e-commerce-like direct sales "enhancing citizens' rights to access information and narrowing the urban-rural information gap"
