AIM: What NUTRIENTS do our bodies need to function properly?

What is the difference between Organic and inorganic substances? Organic substances contain two key elements: Carbon (C) and Hydrogen (H). Must contain both carbon and hydrogen in order to be considered organic. Important organic compounds include: Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.

What is the difference between organic and inorganic substances? Inorganic substances DO NOT contain BOTH carbon and hydrogen. Can contain EITHER carbon OR hydrogen but not both. Important Inorganic substances include: Water, Vitamins and Minerals.

What are the six main nutrients? 1.Carbohydrates 2.Proteins 3.Fats 4.Water 5.Vitamins 6.Minerals

1. Carbohydrates Function – body’s #1 source of energy Building blocks – glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) Food sources – bread, pasta, fruit, grain, vegetables

2. Proteins Function – build and maintain body tissue Building blocks – amino acids Food sources – meats, dairy, beans, nuts

3. Fats Function – #2 source of energy – provide warmth, make cell membranes Building blocks – fatty acids & glycerol Food sources- oils, meats

What are saturated and unsaturated fats? Saturated fats are solid at room temperature. Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature.

What is cholesterol? A type of fat which can line arteries and cause blockages in the blood vessels.
