Good Morning!2/18/2013 DO NOW 1.Where do we get our drinking water from in North Carolina? 2.The Catawba River is one of the most polluted rivers in America, why should we be concerned about this? 3.What types of pollutants can impact our waterways?

ACTIVATOR In 45 seconds, write down everything you can think of when you hear the word “OCEANS.” Most words gets a prize!

Today… LEQ #2 What characteristics of the ocean allow it to support a wide variety of life? LEQ #3 How do marine and land organisms interact with and affect each other?

Agenda o Launching: Anticipation Guide o Finding Nemo Case Study o Sunlight, Depth, Temperature o Upwelling o Estuaries o Conclusion o Ticket Out: Anticipation Guide

KEY POINT 1  The Earth’s oceans contain both living and nonliving resources

Oceans Case Study: Finding Nemo “Field Trip-11:47”, “The Abyss 33:00-35:11” As you watch these clips from the movie, answer the questions on your guided note sheet. As you watch these clips from the movie, answer the questions on your guided note sheet. This will be GRADED ! This will be GRADED !

THINK, PAIR, SHARE (2 minutes) 1.Is life in the ocean diverse… meaning are there different kinds of life? 2.What kinds of ocean life do you see? 3.Why does Nemo look different from the fish his father ran into with Dory? Let’s focus on this last question.

You’re right… The fish all looked different because they lived in different parts of the ocean

Is the Ocean the SAME throughout? NO! How does the ocean change from one area to another?

Key Point # 2 Ocean life depends on 3 factors… 1.Sunlight 2.Temperature 3.Depth

Ocean life o Sunlight o Plants require sunlight to live o Animals rely on plants for oxygen, protection, and a food source

Ocean Life o Temperature o Decreases with depth o Cold salt water is the most dense o Aquatic life is adapted to a particular temperature

Ocean Life o Depth o The deeper you go, the less sunlight and less heat there is o There is also less food at deep depths o Animals at these depths must either eat each other, hunt for falling plankton from above, or dead carcasses that sink to the bottom

Let’s see what animals in the depth of the ocean look like… “Deep Oceans” “Deep Oceans”0:55-2:15 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3CJIKKSUpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3CJIKKSUpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3CJIKKSUpg 1. What adaptation does the Octopus Dumbo have that allows it to live in the deep ocean? 2. What adaptation does the Vampire Squid have that allows it to live in the deep ocean?

CHALLENGE How do sunlight, temperature and depth affect the diversity of ocean life? How do sunlight, temperature and depth affect the diversity of ocean life?  Animals in the ocean must adapt to various ocean habitats…these habitats are dependent upon how much light they can receive.

HOT Q #1 I am going on a submarine ride. As I move from the surface of the ocean to the deep zone, how will the marine life change? 1.Draw a picture of an animal I’d see at the surface of my submarine dive 2.Draw a picture of an animal I’d see deep in the ocean of my submarine dive

Upwelling Demo Watch what happens to the substance. What happened??

Upwelling o Movement of nutrient rich cold water from the depth of the ocean to shallow areas near the shore. o Brings nutrients and minerals that are important to marine life o Because of this, many animals live where upwelling occurs

Upwelling

Turn and talk Explain to your partner what upwelling is in 30 seconds

HOT Q #2 o Why would a fisherman fish in an area with upwelling? o Come up with a valid reason

HOLD THE PHONE….Did you know… o There is ANOTHER ending to Finding Nemo? o Watch “Back to the Reef”

Alternate Ending  After Nemo and his dad are reunited at the end of the movie, they do not return to the reef  Instead, they move to an Estuary….with Dory of course.  They meet all kinds of new friends, friends that look completely different.

Nemo’s New Friends at the Estuary Why do these animals look Different from Nemo’s friends Back at the reef?

Answer This is a different habitat than the ocean environment that Nemo and his friends live in.

Estuaries o Places where fresh water from rivers meets salt water from the ocean o Rich in a wide variety of living things o They are protected by barrier islands which give a lot of dissolved oxygen, nutrients, and minerals – all necessary for life to exist in water environment

HOT Q #3 Why do estuaries support such a wide variety of different life forms?

Key Point #3 Upwelling and estuaries connect marine and land life

Conclusion 1.What kinds of resources live in the ocean? 2.What factors affect ocean life? 3.What is upwelling? 4.What is an estuary?
