In the Trenches
12
IN THE TRENCHES Don’t spend too much time coloring in circles. Look ahead – do the easiest items first. Don’t spend too much time on one question. Circle questions you can’t answer and move on. You can go back and spend time on them later. Put a big “?” by answers you aren’t sure about. You can go back and check them later. Pace yourself. Check, recheck and recheck AGAIN! When the 5 minute warning is announced, check to make sure an answer is bubbled in for every question – even if you have to guess!
13
WAR Maneuvers
14
Math Maneuvers The calculator is your ally (friend/helper), but BE CAREFUL! Scout out ahead to find easy problems. Word problems: Read the last sentence first, then read the whole question touching the words as you read. Draw pictures, make lists. Look at everything listed on a graph or chart before reading the question. Look at EVERY answer BEFORE making a choice. Watch out for an ambush! (every, each, about, not, except)
15
READING MANEUVERS Read the questions before reading the selection. Highlight “black and white,” “right there” type of questions. Read all the answer choices. Use the process of elimination. Read all introductions, captions and words that are in italics.
16
Push on to Victory
17
PUSH ON TO VICTORY! Don’t Retreat! (You’ve worked too hard to give up now—think – don’t panic!) Stamp out “I Can’t!” (Whimps never win) Never Underestimate the Enemy! (You might have made a mistake) Fight to the very end! (Check over again) Always believe ….
