3 Understanding Personality 2 important terms: Personality and Theory Personality: unique and enduring ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. A theory explains a phenomenon, organizes fact, and make prediction. 5 Psychodynamic Who is associated? Sigmund Freud Focus on: Unconscious The unconscious contains: thoughts and feelings that we are not aware. Behavior is based on unconscious drive. Drives can be positive (survival, self- preservation, etc) and negative (greed, aggression, etc) Who is associated? 12 Denial & Displacement Denial: Refuse to admit thoughts or feelings or memories that present a threat Example of Denial: an effect caused by rejected design by client. Displacement: Applying negative feelings to a “safe” target rather than the source of feeling. Example of Displacement: bad mood expressed to certain friend or group of people. 13 Projections & Reaction Formation Projections: Placing your own thoughts, feelings, or behavior onto someone else. Ex of Projections: He/She must be jealous of me. Reaction Formation: Adopt or support the opposite of an unacceptable feeling or thought. Ex of R.Formation: A teenager that says boys/girls are gross. 14 Regression & Repression Regression: Return to a behavior that is connected with an earlier period of development. Ex of Regression: A woman/man acts childish to get attention from her/his lover. Repression: Pushing unacceptable thoughts deep into the unconscious so that they are not accessible. Ex of Repression: Forgetting what was one’s childhood felt like because of experiencing bad things. Regression: Return to a behavior that is connected with an earlier period of development. Ex of Regression: A woman/man acts childish to get attention from her/his lover. Repression: Pushing unacceptable thoughts deep into the unconscious so that they are not accessible. Ex of Repression: Forgetting what was one’s childhood felt like because of experiencing bad things.

15 Sublimation Sublimation: related to Displacement, channeling unacceptable thoughts into an appropriate area. Ex of Sublimation: An artwork that express a painful past experience from an artist. 16 Psychosexual Development Part of Psychodynamic Theory that relates to personality according to Freud. Pleasure is the center of this period. It’s divided to: Oral stage, Anal Stage, Phallic Stage, Latency Stage, and Genital Stage. Part of Psychodynamic Theory that relates to personality according to Freud. 17 Psychosexual Development Oral Stage: Birth - 18 months, the erogenous (sensitive to sexual stimulation) zone is mouth. Anal Stage: 18 months - 3 years, the erogenous zone is anus. Phallic Stage: 4 to 5 years, the erogenous zone is genital. This relates to Oedipus and Electra Complex (penis envy). Latency Stage: 6-11 years, sexual interest is suspended. Genital Stage: 11-12 years, the erogenous zone is genital. The arrival of sexual maturation. Oral Stage: Birth - 18 months, the erogenous (sensitive to sexual stimulation) zone is mouth. 19 Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Similar in range of age with Freud. Not emphasizing on sex, more on psychological drive that affects one’s social development. If the crisis on each stage is not passed well, he/she will have the negative impact caused by it. Ie: If it’s successful, he/she will feel sense of trust and autonomy; if it’s not, he/she will feel sense of mistrust, shame, or doubt. Similar in range of age with Freud. Not emphasizing on sex, more on psychological drive that affects one’s social development. If the crisis on each stage is not passed well, he/she will have the negative impact caused by it.
