1 EB-PVD technology and equipment for producing carbon-based materials.
STCU/NATO Workshop October, 11-12 Kiev Yuriy Kurapov phone International Center for Electron Beam Technologies of E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute

2 Talk outline What is needed in the market?
   What is needed in the market? Brief technology description. Stage of development. Who needs it & how many will they need? What is my unique technology advantage? Competitive matrix. How will I beat the competition? Opportunity for joint work.

3 Proprietary information statement
The technology material presented in this talk is available for licensing or joint product development. None of the slides contain any confidential or proprietary information which would prevent patenting the technology.

4 Problem Description & Market Need
Advanced technology should have guarantee a high level of purity of producing cabon-base materials ( fullerenes, nanotubes, diamondlike structures, carbides and composite materials - coatings on their base). Market need a technology with high level of productivity at highest quality of producing carbon-containing materials. The potential market is electronics and optoelectronics, medicine, chemical technology, instrument and mechanical engineering.

5 Brief technology description
Technology is based on the method of EB evaporation of carbon using a liquid pool of tungsten and condensation of the vapour flow ; The second independent source of EB evaporation of metallic and non-metallic materials can be used, which are added to the main vapour flow of carbon, if required; This method has been recently improved by applying the technique of reflection of the vapour flow of carbon to form in space more uniform vapour flows in terms of composition and energy of the particles. a-nanotubes b- columnar structure;

6 Advantages Electron beam technology differs from the currently available methods of arc and laser evaporation of carbon by universality and flexibility, which allay to obtain different structures and materials on their base. Temperature of the condensation surface of an oriented vapour flow changes in the range from room temperature to C and respectively structures from amorphous to nano- and micro-sized. Respectively - temperature, composition of the vapour flow, vapour flow ionization, bleeding gases and using additives of inorganic and organic substances, including catalysts of the growth of macromolecular structures of the type of nanotubes and fullerenes. This technology is allow to produce macromolecular (fullerenes, nanotubes) and diamondlike structures, carbides and composite materials (coatings) on their base.

7 Experimental results a
In the range of moderato temperature up to 500°C the planar structure have been received which incline to form nano- and micro-dimension tubes-a; In the high temperature range the columnar structure have been received in the form of braids with inner elements of structure-b; It have been received carbides such as TiC, SiC in the form of powders or coatings on products (wear- and erosion resistant coatings on parts of gas turbine engines). a b

8 Stage of development and international patents
First samples of carbon-base materials deposited by EB-PVD technology are in test now. US Patent of Movchan B.A. and others ‘’Method of producing carbon-containing materials by electron beam vacuum evaporation of graphite and subsequent condensation’’; Application for Ukraine Patent of Movchan B.A., Kurapov Y.A., Yakovchuk K.Yu. ‘’Method and equipment for producing a carbon-containing materials by electron beam vacuum evaporation of graphite and subsequent condensation on a substrate. Application for Ukraine Patent of Movchan B.A., Yakovchuk K.Yu. ‘’Method of carbon-base materials production by electron-beam evaporation in vacuum’’. The UE-204 EB-PVD unit developed and manufactured at ICEBT

9 Targeted Market Segment
Electronics and optoelectronics, medicine, chemical technology, instrument and mechanical engineering needs it. In present time we can produce the EB - PVD units for experimental production of all indicated materials - price 1,0 - 1,5 mil.$.

10 Competition EB-PVD technology have high flexibility and allow to produce on the universal equipment not only carbon structures in the form of powder (half-finished product), but composite materials in the form of foil, sheet, coatings on the different type of products and multi-layer solid-state construction in the present-day microelectronics and future nanoelectronics excepting traditional stage of consolidation.

11 Competitive Matrix Take into account high effectiveness and universality of EB-PVD technology the price of finished product, excepting the stages of initial powder-like nanostructures consolidation, will be some times lower in comparison with tradition many-stage technology for material production from nano-powder. Evaporation productivity of present EB-PVD units kg/h and may be increase 2 -3 time more.

12 Opportunities We are seeking for potential partner-investors for producing material testing and organize the industrial production of equipment, materials and finished produce.
