One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:23 - 27 (NIV): What the Passage Says

Mark 3:1-6 (NIV): What the Passage Says Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.” Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

Mark 2:23 – 3:6: What the Passage “Says” “…why are they doing what is unlawful?” “…looking for a reason to accuse Jesus” “…plot with the Herodians to kill Jesus” Legal System of Rules vs. Intent of Sabbath Fault-Finders vs. Fact- Finders Alignment with political influences to Kill the Competition
12
Mark 2:23 – 3:6: What the Passage (really) “Says” Legal System of Rules vs. Intent of Sabbath Fault-Finders vs. Fact- Finders Kill the Competition Threatened by Jesus’ Authority (as Lord) Jealous Envious

1.Are we devoted to a religious “system” or submitted to Jesus as Lord ? Mark 2:23 – 27a (NIV): What the Passage Means for Us For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools… Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity… Romans 1:21–22; 24 (NASB95)

2. Is God’s ability to use us hindered by jealousy or personal ambition? Mark 2:23 - 27 (NIV): What the Passage Means for Us … if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. James 3:14–16 (NLT)
15
3. Is envy an issue in our lives - or do we embrace God’s anointing in the lives of those around us? Mark 2:23 - 27 (NIV): What the Passage Means for Us Now at the feast the governor [Pilate] was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. Matthew 27:15–18 (ESV)
16
The Lord is Doing Something New… This week there are Two questions … Question 1: Will we choose to be part of what He is doing? Question 2: Will we prepare our lives for what He wants to do?
17
1. Lordship: Are there areas of my life that I need to surrender to Jesus Mark 2:23 - 27 (NIV): What the Passage Means for Me 2. Repentance: Are Jealousy or Ambition hindering my usefulness? 3. Repentance: Am I allowing any issues of Envy to affect my relationships … or do I seek to promote the highest and best interests of those around me?
