What exactly is Greek Mythology? myth – a legendary story used to describe a supernatural being or event or explain a religious belief or practice Greek myths are about the lives and adventures of a wide variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines, and other mythological creatures mythology is a collection of myths = Greek Literature

The appeal of Greek Mythology The Ancient Greek culture has been kept alive by the oral and later written stories handed down through thousands of years. Modern plays, novels, television programs, movies and even advertisements refer to Greek gods, goddesses, heroes and their stories.

Components of Greek Mythology god – a male being that is believed to be immortal, more powerful than humans, and wants to be worshipped goddess – a female being that is believed to be immortal, more powerful than humans, and wants to be worshipped Each god or goddess was worshipped as a deity and ruled over certain areas of the Greeks’ lives.

Mythological Creatures mythological creatures have characteristics like an animal or a monster along with a few human features. Few of them possess supernatural powers All of them have many stories related to them.

In the Beginning… Chaos – formless matter from which the cosmos was created. Produced: Mother Earth, Gaea, mother and wife of Father Heaven. Father Heaven = Uranus Gaea + Uranus = The Titans

The Titans The Titans, also known as the elder gods, ruled the earth before the Olympians overthrew them. Cronus, ruler of the Titans, was dethroned by his son Zeus. Most of the Titans fought with Cronus against Zeus and were punished by being banished to Tartarus.
