Warm Up: Brainstorm What do you think of when you hear the word CITIZEN?

I: Civics is the study of the rights and duties of citizens. A: Citizens are part of a country, have certain rights, and responsibilities, and they agree to follow rules and accept gov’t authority.

Jus sanguinis: right of citizenship by blood. 1.Parentage determines citizenship 2.Born to Americans living abroad or traveling abroad

B: Naturalization Process : 1. Naturalization =a process by which foreign-born people become US citizens. a. non-citizens are called aliens. b. immigrants are people who move to another country. 2. Expatriation = giving up one’s citizenship. a. person who becomes a naturalized citizen of another country automatically loses his/her American citizenship

III: Duties of Citizens A: Duties are things we are required to do. 1. Obey laws 2. Pay taxes 3. serve in court (jury duty and as a witness) 4. attend school 5. Selective Service: all males must sign up for service when they reach 18 in case we ever need the draft.

Naturalization process: Read, write and speak English Have Good Character Live here for at least 5 years. Pass a test People can come and work with a green card, student visa or work visa for a limited time but must return home

Americans with Disability Act. Passed in 1990. Prohibits employers private and public, labor unions and the government from discriminating against individuals with disabilities.
