Diocesan Synod 8 th November 2014

The Diocese of Canterbury Case Studies

The Diocese of Canterbury ADAFOR Heating Project Matthew Morris

The Diocese of Canterbury The feasibility of biomass heating for churches in the Diocese of Canterbury Summary of Findings by Matthew Morris Kent Downs AONB Unit (ADAFOR Interreg project)

The Diocese of Canterbury ‘From Anecdote to Evidence’ (2013) Heating in churches helps improve comfort “…Improving buildings can have a positive effect on church growth…”

The Diocese of Canterbury Delivering heat in churches Expensive Poor performance Rural locations - oil, LPG and electricity Age, maintenance, moisture, safety…

The Diocese of Canterbury

Delivering heat in churches Impact Low internal temperatures Comfort levels hard to maintain Problems with damp and condensation Damage to building fabric, furniture, paintings… Impact on congregation growth

The Diocese of Canterbury What do we know? – Most churches have some form of heating – But nearly all are under-heated Some systems not used – Rural churches – most expensive fuels – Maintenance costly – Visual impact – Oil theft – Re-ordering projects present opportunities

The Diocese of Canterbury What do we know? – Uptake of renewable energy is rare Of >500 churches in Kent…~5 with systems? – St. Stephen Lympne: GSHP – St. Mary Ashford: Geothermal heat pump – St. Anthony Alkham: Solar PV – St. Nicholas Rochester: Biomass and solar PV – RE technologies are expensive Fundraising required – But – The RHI subsidy is a game changer

The Diocese of Canterbury

DioCan + AONB – collaborative project – ‘Initial feasibility and design principles for biomass heating in churches for the Diocese of Canterbury’ – £12k project total - funded by ADAFOR Interreg (EU ERDF) Why? – Biomass per kWh is cheaper than gas, oil, LPG and electricity – Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) - 20 yr subsidy – Significantly improved payback – High grade heat from biomass boilers – Improved heating regimes – Excellent secondary benefits Sustainability + reduced carbon footprint Redundant/unsafe heating systems can be discarded

The Diocese of Canterbury Is guidance available? – Eco Congregation – Shrinking the Footprint – English Heritage – Ecclesiastical – Diocese of Oxford – Churches Conservation Trust

The Diocese of Canterbury But… – Very general – Not specific to locations – Does not help with feasibility or business case (£££)

The Diocese of Canterbury Process Around 20 PCCs expressed an interest to DioCan From these 12 locations were selected Borden, Boxley, Detling, Hollingbourne, Kingston, Lyminge, Molash, Ospringe, Patrixbourne, Selling, Stalisfield, Wychling

The Diocese of Canterbury Phase I: Site visits – Building survey (approaches to heating, heritage) – Meetings with PCC members – Energy data collection Six main criteria: 1.Existing energy use 2.Re-ordering opportunities 3.Practical aspects of installing renewable heating 4.Financial & technical issues 5.Potential planning issues 6.PCC resources (and enthusiasm)

The Diocese of Canterbury Reduced initial list of 12 to 5 churches – Borden, Boxley, Detling, Selling, Lyminge Phase II More detailed survey (SEWF) – Involving M&E engineer (MCA) – Review by Nick Lee Evans (DAC approved architect) Report and presentation to DAC committee Biomass heating received tacit approval from the DAC It is a viable option…but needs careful study

The Diocese of Canterbury Phase III Detailed architectural advice Molash, Borden, Selling Led by Lee Evans Partnership Results by early 2015
