Description of movement Horizontal translation and rotation of horizontal arm around top turning table axis. Vertical translation of sample and rotation of detector’s table arm around bottom turning table axis. Manual screw Jack to move plate where turning tables sit. Used for alignement. The setup allows relative positioning of detector with respect to sample. detector sample http://www.ife.no/en/ife/departments/physics/projects/r2d2 Photo: Isabel Llamas

Beam properties The beam flux is of the order of 10 5 per s cm 2 thermal neutrons. It comes from the reactor through a shutter with two opening positions: full open or Soller collimated. The collimator in the shutter is made of Cd layers and has a 36’ divergence. The beam is then monochromated by a composite Ge wafer monochromator, and exits the shielding at 90 degrees through a 30’ Gd Soller collimator inserted in a borated-polyethylene tube. Two JJ X-Ray IB-C80-AIR slits with borated aluminum blades are placed before the sample position. Accessible wavelengths via rotation of the monochromator. Beam monitor / counts per second Rotation Motor /steps (400), 2Å (511), 1.54Å (911), 0.88Å (711), 1.12Å (822), 0.94Å

Electronics and software The setup is motor controlled using both commercial and in-house software. Current NIM Modules include: Canberra high voltage power supplies 3106D, Canberra preamplifiers 2006, Canberra amplifiers 2022, Canberra single channel analyzers 2030. A MKS multi gas flow meter with a full scale of flow ranges (5 to 50000 sccm) and maximum inlet pressure of 10 bar is also available. An in-house LabView program is used for detector count acquisition. A CAEN digitizer with software in development is used to acquire PHS. A HDO4000 High Definition Oscilloscope from Teledyne Lecroy is also used.
