THE OPTIMAL BIBLIOGRAPHY contains all relevant publications has links to the full text, if WUR has a subscription is updated frequently has good search facilities can be searched from anywhere ………………………………

EXAMPLE OF A SEARCH STRATEGY REMOVAL OF SULFUR FROM VEHICLE EXHAUST what are the concepts?............. Synonyms? Different writings?..............

REMOVAL OF SULFUR FROM VEHICLE EXHAUST Concept 1: removal Synonyms, etc: remov*, extract*, filter*, desulphur*, etc. Concept 2: sulfur Synonyms, etc: sulphur*, sulfur* Concept 3: exhaust Synonyms, etc.: emission*, particula*, particl* Concept 4: vehicles Synonyms, etc.: cars, trucks, buses

ONE SEARCH LINE (Remov* OR extract* OR desulphur* OR desulfur* OR filter*) AND (sulfur* OR sulphur*) AND (exhaust* OR emission* OR particula* OR particle*) AND (vehicle* OR cars OR truck* OR bus OR buses)

SEARCHING IN VARIOUS BIBLIOGRAPHIES In Scopus: OK (in the default fields) In OvidSP (selecting: Biological Abstracts, CAB Abstracts from 1984, Medline): too much time; in two portions and combine the results In Google Scholar: not possible, find alternative ways to get relevant results

WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM IT?

CONCLUSION On how to use GS, Scopus and OvidSP: Use GS for:  quick searches Use Scopus for:  detailed searches  citation information  finding recent articles (articles in press) Use OvidSP to:  perform a search in more than one bibliography

BIBLIOGRAPHIC DATABASES All disciplines Scopus Web of Science Google Scholar Specific topics CAB-Abstracts Biological Abstracts FSTA Medline/PubMed SciFinder on the Web …………….. Overlap Additional Different search platforms Use several databases

Books Journals Maps Reports, theses, etc. WoS Scopus CAB BA ASFA LSW SocIndex PsycInfo Google Scholar

IMPROVING YOUR SEARCH To narrow: more specific terms, less truncation, more concepts…. To broaden: more (general) terms, more truncation, less concepts ………… Build on what you have found: More or better terms (thesaurus!) Key authors/ groups References (citation search)

WoS Scopus CAB BA ASFA LSW SocIndex PsycInfo Google Scholar Portals MetaSearch Which databases?

THE CONCLUSION your information need is solved by information literacy. Be information literate!! © Wageningen UR

SELECTION OF THE SUBJECT There are two subjects to choose from: 1. Snack patterns of elderly in Europe The objective is to describe snack consumption of elderly in different European countries and the effect of snack consumption on energy and micronutrient intake and health status of the elderly. Source: Haveman- Nies A., De Groot L.C.P.G.M., Van Staveren W.A. Snack patterns of older europeans (1998) Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 98 (11), pp. 1297-1302 2. Influence of climatic change on food security Climate change has a direct impact on local weather patterns. Rising temperatures and less predictable and more erratic rainfall patterns resulting in periods of droughts or floods will directly affect agricultural production. This will have a negative impact on the food security of many rural households. To reduce the risks of crop failure and to be less vulnerable farmers will have to take action. What are the opportunities and possibilities for farmers in developing countries to adapt their farming systems to climate change?
