Vocabulary vo-ca-bu-la-ry o This first part of this unit has 12 words. o Most of the words are broken up into syllables as we tend to say them. o The underlined words are one syllable words. o Learn each word’s definition and spelling.

af-fect Definition: o When you affect something, you make a difference to it. o When you affect something, you somehow cause it to change.

sym-bol Definition: o A symbol is something that stands for something else. o On a map, when you see a tiny picture or icon, it tells you what you are looking at without using words. o A map key, or map legend, will tell you what they represent.

trail Definition: o A trail is a path that people can follow. o A trail is often a dirt walkway through trees and shrubs, sometimes in the woods.

ce-le-brate Definition: o When you celebrate you do things for a special event or day. o Often when we celebrate we have a ceremony or a party or a dinner with close people.

scale Definition: o The scale on the map tells how far apart two places are. o A scale is measurement on a map that helps you to understand how big or how small a place is. o A scale is often part of the map key or legend.

mar-ket Definition: o A market is a place where people buy and sell things. o At a market people can decide on a price together.

farm-ing Definition: o Farming is growing crops or raising animals. o Farming is done out in country fields, outside of the city.

fish-ing Definition: o People go fishing to catch fish and other animals that live in the water. o Fishing can be done from a boat, or from the dock at the shore. o Some people fish as a hobby to relax. Other people fish as a way to earn money.

po-pu-la-tion Definition: o The population of a place is the number of people who live there. o The population in the city is greater than the population in a farming community.

com-pass rose Definition: o A compass rose shows the basic directions: north, south, east, and west on a map. o A compass rose also has four additional directions: northeast, southeast, southwest, o and northwest. (Intermediate directions)

com-mon Definition: o When something is common, it is seen often, or many times. o It is common to see school buses in a town like White Plains because we have five elementary schools in a small area.
