2
Endocrine System - Objectives Recognize all the structures of the Endocrine System Recall all the major functions of the Endocrine System Explain the process that your body goes through to use the endocrine system Describe how the endocrine system changes as you age
3
Structure/Function of the System Composed of Endocrine Glands Ductless glands that secrete chemical messengers into the body These Chemicals are called Hormones
4
The Structures of the Endocrine System
5
Endocrine Glands Pituitary Gland Hypothalamus Thyroid Glands Parathyroid Glands Adrenal Gland Pancreas Pineal Secretes hormones from the brain to the reproductive glands Testes/Ovaries Functions of the glands vary depending upon where they are located.
6
Pituitary Gland Hypothalamus Master Gland Controls Growth Over all of the body Regulates body’s functions as well Digestion Regulates secretion of the Pituitary Gland Like it’s body guard CNS regulates this gland **Both of these glands work together with the NS to regulate and help the body with homeostasis and any changes that happen…
7
ThyroidParathyroid Consists of 2 lobes Largest ES gland Increases metabolic rate Decreases bone deterioration Found in the Thyroid Regulates what is in the blood Increases bone breakdown
8
Adrenal Gland Create the fight or flight response in your body Major effects on the body for this response include: Increased breakdown of glucose for energy Increased heart rate Vasodilatation of the blood vessels Increased metabolic rate of several tissues
9
Pancreas Surrounded by a loop of the small intestine Regulates insulin and glucose breakdown in the body Glucose is “sugar” that your body in turn uses for energy Insulin breaks down glucose into what we use as energy
10
Endocrine System and Aging Gradual decrease of some hormones Growth Reproductive Men decrease Women experience menopause Some decreases are due to decreasing physical activity in elderly No age related decrease in blood glucose regulation.
