Open platforms and SDN/NFV: a paradigm shift to boost innovative Internet services and applications Elio Salvadori (CREATE-NET, Italy) George Xilouris (NCSR Demokritos, Greece) Róbert Szabó (Ericsson, Hungary) Fulvio Risso (Politecnico di Torino, Italy)

Context The rise of SDN and NFV comes from the need for operators to take better, more flexible and cheaper control over their network OpenFlow was key to form critical mass around SDN from academia and industry… …however, the availability of several open-source tools has been fundamental to expedite the SDN/NFV paradigm change

An increasing amount of open source ingredients… A de-facto reference marketplace for a wide community of developers that are building new Internet applications and network functions CONTROLLERS CLOUD MANAGERS DATAPATH ELEMENTS xDPd Open Network Linux NICE OpenVirtex OFTest OFrewind TOOLS Pyretic OpenNaaS

Session goal An overview of the current open platform initiatives in the field of SDN/NFV What is next and how European industry/SMEs and academia are organizing themselves to promote novel open platforms Session agenda: o EU&US perspectives on open-platforms for SDN/NFV o Panel discussion o Session wrap-up

Speakers Diego Lopez Telefonica I+D Antonio Lioy Politecnico di Torino András Császár Ericsson Hagen Wösner BISDN GmbH Ali Al- Shabibi ONLab

Panel Session

Which are the most promising open platforms that will model the SDN/NFV scenarios in the years to come? How open should these platform be (open- source versus API-only models)?

How to engage third-party developers? What is the roadmap to create an open marketplace for NFV services?

How to ensure security and privacy in emerging NFV deployments ?

Questions Which are the most promising open platforms that will model the SDN/NFV scenarios in the years to come? o How open should these platform be (open-source versus API-only models)? How to engage third-party developers? o What is the roadmap to create an open marketplace for NFV services? How to ensure security and privacy in emerging NFV deployments? 1.(Diego) How can Service Providers switch to a more agile/DevOps way of working? 2.(Ali) US view on NFV concept versus Europe’s 3.(Hagen): How can network service development cycles be shortened by and open, collaborative, integrated environments? 4.(Antonio): How can network security be improved by an user- centric approach relying on virtualized security applications? 5.(Andras): How network platform as a service can promote to faster and more flexible service introduction?
