3 UN specialized agency with headquarters in Geneva Dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property (IP) system, which rewards creativity, stimulates innovation and contributes to economic development while safeguarding the public interest Was established by the WIPO Convention in 1967 Director General is Francis Gurry Introduction to WIPO

4 Background In September 2000, the WIPO Assemblies approved the creation of a substantial new program of activities, focusing on the IP-related needs of SMEs worldwide SMEs Division established in October 2000 Main objective - Enable the greater and more effective use of IP asset management strategies by SMEs for strengthening their competitiveness, especially in developing countries, LDCs and countries with economies in transition

5 Actual situation… A team dedicated to provide technical assistance and capacity building activities to IP Offices and SMEs support institutions in the world…

16 Strategies / Activities – Information Awareness creation through seminars and workshops Publications Patent Information Documentation Centre (PIDC) Assist local inventors patent their inventions The inventor is assisted and guided in the completion of a patent application form. NOTAP conducts a global search through the PIDC. If the conditions of patentability are met NOTAP submits the Application to the IP office and pays the relevant registration fees and processes it at the Patent Registry until the certificate is issued; National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion - Nigeria

25 Strategies / Activities – Action Patent mapping approach by Toryod in Thailand to enhance clusters competitiveness http://www.toryod.com Patent Map are widely used to facilitate the work of the Experts which analyze, select and comment the most relevant data. Toryod in Thailand use widely this technique to map patents coming from various fields relevant with the cluster policy developed by the country for the improvement of existing products or services (green tea, palm oil, coconut…) Partnerships are key for the clusters competitiveness
