Today we will be learning to recognise and describe 2-D shapes. A 2-D shape is a flat shape. Excuse me, but what is a 2-D shape?
3
Mental Activity Practise subtraction facts to 20.
4
Work out the answer before the question disappears.
5
19-10 18 minus 9 15 - 6 5 less than 12 16 subtract 8
6
11-7 14 minus 7 20 - 16 13 less than 20 20 subtract 11
7
Try subtractions using number lines. Top Tip Don’t forget to count on to the nearest multiple of 10.
8
2436 Where shall we jump to first? 30 36 – 24 = Now we can jump to 36. 6 + 6 = 66 How many have we counted on altogether? 12
9
26 40 Where shall we jump to first? 30 45 – 26 = Now where shall we jump? 104 45 5 How many from 40 to 45? 194 + 10 + 5 = 19
10
Can you think of a quick way to do this? 45 – 19 = 19 is near to 20. 45 – 20 = 25 25 + 1 =26
11
Main Activity Today we will be naming and describing shapes.
12
Name this shape! Circle
13
And this? Square
14
What about this? Triangle
15
Can you name this one? Rectangle
16
And this? Hexagon
17
Try this. Pentagon
18
Do you know this one? Octagon
19
What about this one? Semicircle
20
What do all these shapes have in common? They are all 2–D or plane shapes. All 2-D shapes are flat. They all have height and width.
21
3-D shapes all have height, width and depth.
22
What is this shape called? A triangle. How many sides does it have? How many angles does it have?
23
A vertex is the meeting point of two lines. The two lines form an angle. How many vertices does this triangle have?
24
Top Tip All triangles have three sides. All triangles have three angles. All triangles have three vertices.
25
