Any number, term or expression raised to the power of zero is one. = 1 Example: x 0 y 0 =1 (6 x ) 0 =1 Agenda: 2/10/11 Do Now Evaluating numerical exponents Mini-Lesson Vocabulary Zero Exponents Negative Exponents Group work Past Regents Questions Share-out Discussion Summary

Power : An expression in the form b x. Base : In an expression of the form b x, the b ase is b. Exponent : In an expression of the form b x, the e xponent is x. It tells you how many times the base is used in repeated multiplication. Vocabulary Aim: How do we evaluate and simplify expressions with zero and Negative Exponents? You get rid of Negative Exponents by flipping the exponent like reciprocals. Move the number or variable raised to a negative power to the other side (of the fraction). The exponent will then be positive. Aim: How do we evaluate and simplify expressions with zero and Negative Exponents? Why didn’t the 4 move? It isn’t raised to a negative power (would be in parenthesis). Examples Aim: How do we evaluate and simplify expressions with zero and Negative Exponents?
