Comma Splices Bones: Tal Osovsky Flesh: Rachel Lee Cardinal Sins: Maria Meza Carnal Pleasures: Kris Lenk

Bones Comma Splice (similar to run-on) – When a writer connects two independent clauses with a comma. INDEPENDENT CLAUSE,INDEPENDENT CLAUSE Example: INDEPENDENT CLAUSE +, + INDEPENDENT CLAUSE Example: There was an accident on highway 17 last week, several people got hurt.

Bones Independent Clause – A sentence that can stand alone which expresses a complete thought. Ex: I drive to school. Dependent Clause - A sentence that cannot stand alone and does not expresses a complete thought. Ex: Unless it comes today

Flesh Correcting Comma Splices  Separate or join together the two independent clauses that have been put together by a comma  Prevents run-on sentences

Flesh Example of a Run on Sentence:  The Das family travels together to the Sun Temple at Konark, they then visit the hills at Udayagiri.

Flesh Fixing a Run-On Sentence Four ways: 1) Separating the Two Sentences  The Das family travels together to the Sun Temple at Konark. They then visit the hills at Udayagiri. 2) Adding a Coordinating Conjunction and a Comma  Coordinating Conjunction: Connects two words, sentences, phrases, or clauses together  Ex. for, and, nor, or, etc…  The Das family travels to the Sun Temple at Konark, and they then visit the hills at Udyagiri.

Flesh 3) Adding a Subordinate Conjunction and a Comma  Subordinate Conjunction: Transition between two ideas in the sentence Ex. After, although, as, because, etc…  After the Das family travels to the Sun Temple at Konark, they then visit the hills at Udyagiri. 4) Semicolon  After the Das family travels to the Sun Temple at Konark; they then visit the hills at Udyagiri.

Cardinal Sins Mistakes: Ex.1: Reading the book Push by Sapphire is a great example for people to not judge others, we don’t know what peoples lives are like and the reasoning for their actions and behavior. Ex.2: I didn’t like the movie, it was way too long. Ex.3: College is stressful, professors give you a ton of homework like if that was the only class you are taking.

Carnal Pleasures  According to The Elements of Style by E.B. White and William Strunk, Jr. comma splices are acceptable to use if the clauses are short and alike.  EX: Veni, vidi, vici (Made famous by Julius Caesar in 47 BC)  Translates to: I came, I saw, I conquered

Carnal Pleasures Comma splices are also acceptable in most poetic writings. EX: “Roses are red, violets are blue…” Comma splices are also acceptable in other languages, but it is usually considered an error in the English language.
