Newspaper Supervisors Publisher: owns the newspaper Managing Editor: oversees the paper’s publication, sets production dates & deadlines Section Editor: supervises specific part of the paper & assigns stories (sports, features, etc.) Layout Editor: supervises the design or look of the publication Business Manager: supervises the budget for the publication

Newspaper Staff Members Reporter: writes news or feature stories Columnist: writes columns, opinion pieces Editorialist: writes editorials that present the newspaper’s opinion on topics Photographer: takes pictures to accompany stories Advertising salesperson: works with individuals, groups & companies to purchase advertising in the publication.

News Sources Beat Reporter: reporter has a specific topic to cover (local crime, high school sports, etc.) Reporter must develop sources who will feed him/her news stories. Wire Service: professional news gathering companies that will sell stories & photos Tips: reporters/editors use tips from the public & other sources as ideas for stories Future Book: newspapers keep chronological listing of events that will be happening in the future that can lead to stories

Teamwork Is Required! Reporters usually write individual stories, but do work with others in the process. Editors assign stories and call for changes or corrections to the writing. Photographers should know angle of story to get appropriate pictures. Layout editors make changes to stories, depending on space available.

Newspapers Are Challenging! Deadlines are very strict and must be met. Accuracy is essential. Errors can get you fired and/or sued. Beating the competition is a constant pressure. Your stories need to be NEWs, not old information. The strange hours and stress lead to many burning out and giving up.
