2 What Was Fashion in General? - Fashion changed after WW1. -Before the war, high end fashion was limited to the rich, who could afford seam stresses. -After the war it was easier for the middle class to re-create the loose fitting styles of the rich. Then:Now:

3 Women’s Fashion

4 The general images of women's fashion was becoming more androgynous. Women aimed for a slender, boyish figure (no curves). The French had a term for this known as “garçonne”.

5 Women’s Fashion Common trends were: -drop waist - loosely fitting clothing -pleats and gathers - handkerchief hemlines -below the knee hems

6 Shoes Women’s shoes became lighter and finer with a pointed toe at the one end and a strap at the other. The Strap: became a necessity to make sure your shoe did not fall off while you were dancing.

7 Lingerie Women would wear slips and bloomers under their dresses. Confining bras and high waisted under wear Corsets were a thing of the past

8 Hair The Bob: A blunt cut, level with the bottom of the ears all around the head. It was worn either with bangs or with the hair brushed off of the forehead. Women enhanced the bob hairstyle by adding curls, waves, or getting it shingled. DID YOU KNOW? The popular bobbed hair styles promoted the invention of the bobby pin.

9 Makeup Cream or ivory face powder Deep coloured lipstick (red, plum, orange) Heavy eye makeup (eyeliner on both lids, grey eye shadow) Thin sloping eyebrow (brought out with pencil) “Cupid Bow” mouth (exaggerated lower and upper lip with less width)

10 Accessories Hats: Colourful felt hats, such as cloche hats, were popular to match clothing. Beaded Handbags/Purses: Lined with satin or silk, colourful and beaded bags and purses were popular. Jewellery: Simple jewellery designs based on geometric shapes and incorporating semi-precious stones and Platinum were popular. Also, flappers wore long strands of beads.

11 Flappers Flappers were a new type of women. They broke ground for gender equality by smoking, drinking and partying. This was evidenced by their care free and glamorous style.

12 Men’s Fashion

13 Suits (even in casual wear) Jackets with two or three buttons Pants at the natural waist line with wide legs Cuffed pants and shirt sleeves Bow tie/tie

14 Black Patent-Leather shoes became popular, especially for formal events. Two Toned shoes were used for causal events. Lace-up shoes and shoes with fringed tongues were in high demand. Shoes

15 Hair Slicked Back Style: Parted hair to the side and then combed back and slicked with tonic, keeping the longer layers of hair at the top. Military Style: A short cut to resemble the traditional military hair styles.

16 Accessories Hats: Different hat designs were worn depending on the season. Hat styles include; Flat caps, Boater hats, and Bowler hats. Gloves: Brightly coloured, thin gloves made of leather and buttoned at the wrist were used. Pocket Squares: Made of silk, pocket squares were used to formalize suits.

17 Fashion Icons In the 1920’s, silent film stars, designers and royal members were the main fashion inspirations.

18 Weddings Popular wedding styles of the 1920’s included cloche hats and ornate bouquets for the brides. Men still dressed in their best suits for a wedding. Popular bridal dresses had lace and feathers on them.

19 Swimwear Swimsuits were made out of wool Popular swimsuit styles were a sleeveless tank-suit with attached pre-fitted shorts Swimsuits were usually baggy and loose fitting DID YOU KNOW? Bathing caps were invented to protect women’s bobbed hair from becoming wet.

20 Fashion Production Fashion products were being made at home or by a tailor or a dressmaker. Fashion designs had to be simplistic enough to be reproduced and altered without too much added expense. Fashion production was time consuming because of the many fittings and the many hours it took for making the fabrics into clothes.
