Young Milo is bored. Then he finds a tollbooth, a map, and a book of rules. In his toy car he follows the map to the City of Dictionopolis in the Land of Wisdom. He stops in the Land of Expectations and gets stuck in the Doldrums. He is joined by Tock, a watchdog who tells him of the Princess Rhyme and Reason, banished by the two Kings of Wisdom. At the word market of Dictionopolis, Milo meets King Azaz’s ministers, who take him to a royal banquet. Azaz orders Milo, Humbug, and Tock to rescue the princess.
