1 AUGUST 26, 2014 I can use commas with independent clauses. I can apply knowledge of denotation to determine meaning of words. I can apply before, during, and after reading strategies. I can demonstrate comprehension of a text.

2 GRAMMAR Comma Rule #3- Independent Clauses  Use a comma with a conjunction between independent clauses (complete sentences).  Conjunction- FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)  Example: My grandmother refuses to go to bed early, and I’m afraid she’s going to catch a bad cold.  Example: I went to bed early last night, but I am still tired today.  We will complete 5-7 together  You complete 8-15 on your own

3 VOCABULARY QUIZ/CLICK IN  Write your answers on your paper and then put into the clickers.

4 CHAPTER 2 NEW VOCABULARY FOR THE GREAT GATSBY 1. contiguous- connecting without a break 2. facet- aspect; phase; side 3. cower- to crouch, as in fear or shame 4. interpose- to step in between parties; mediate 5. apathetic- not interested or concerned 6. languid- lacking in spirit 7. imply- to indicate or suggest without being explicitly stated 8. strident- having a shrill, irritating quality or character 9. deft- nimble; skillful; clever 10. clad- dressed; covered Homework: Find the words in context. Write the sentence and the page number.

5 CHAPTER 3 NEW VOCABULARY FOR THE GREAT GATSBY 11. permeate- to pass into or through every part of 12. innuendo- an indirect comment about a person or thing of a derogatory nature 13. Erroneous- containing error; mistaken; wrong 14. cordial- courteous 15. vehement- strongly emotional; intense; passionate 16. impetuous- characterized by sudden or rash action 17. vacuous- lacking in ideas or intelligence 18. corpulent-large or bulky of body; stout; fat 19. provincial- having the manners and viewpoints considered narrow or rustic 20. din- loud, confused noise Homework: Find the words in context. Write the sentence and the page number.

6 REVIEW LITERARY DEVICES  Tone- the way the author feels about the subject they are writing about.  Allusion- a reference to something else.  Idiom-an expression that is not meant to be taken literally.

7 THE GREAT GATSBY  Comprehension Check 1. List the five characters the reader meets in chapter 1. 2. What is the setting of chapter1? 3. Describe Tom and Daisy’s relationship. Why is it strained? 4. What is the mood in chapter 1? Explain. 5. How is Gatsby described at the end of chapter 1? 6. What can the reader pick up on as far as author’s tone in chapter 1?

8 THE GREAT GATSBY: WITH A PARTNER BUT… ON YOUR OWN PAPER 1. Make a chart with 9 columns. Find all the colors that are listed in chapter 1. Write the page number where found and the sentence. What connotation does the color provide? You will keep this chart through the book. 2. Find an example of imagery, simile, and allusion in chapter one. Remember, allusion is the reference to literature, mythology, the Bible, etc…. You will have 10 minutes to work on the following two activities. If you do not finish in class, you will need to finish at home.

9 THE GREAT GATSBY  For homework, read chapters 2 and 3 and answer the following questions. 1. What does Nick learn about Tom at the end of the chapter 2? 2. How does Tom’s treatment of Mrs. Wilson affect Nick? 3. In chapter 3, what does the reader learn about Gatsby from Nick’s observations before we meet him? For homework, also find the chapter 2 and 3 vocabulary in context. If you didn’t finish classwork, you will need to finish at home.

10 READ  Read pg. 39-55: The Family of Little Feet; A Rice Sandwich; Chanclas; Hips; The First Job  Answer the question: How does Esperanza change as she enters adolescence?  How does each vignette show something about identity?  How does it connect to you, something you have read, or your world?  Choose one of the chapters from your list for your writing project. -Include at least 3 pieces of imagery and 1 other device of your choice.
