#21 – Chester A. Arthur Son of a school teacher and clergyman. 1848: Graduated from Union College. 1854: admitted to the bar – lawyer in New York city. 1859: married Ellen Lewis Herndon Moves to Kansas to start law practice – leaves after 3-4 months

#21 – Chester A. Arthur 1861-62: returned to New York to practice law. 1871-79: President Grant appoints Arthur as collector of the Port of New York.

#21 – Chester A. Arthur 1881: elected Vice President under Garfield. September 19, 1881: Garfield dies from an assassination. Chester A. Arthur takes over. 1881-85: appointed the 21 st President of the United States.

#21 – Chester A. Arthur 1882: Chinese Exclusion Act signed. Does not allow any Chinese to enter the US for a period of ten years.

#21 – Chester A. Arthur 1883: dedicates the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, the worlds largest suspended bridge of the time. 1885: ill with Brights Disease, he did not seek another term. November 19, 1886: Dies in New York City.
