INTERNATIONAL TREATIES ON DEMAND UN Palermo Protocol Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Persons 2011/36/EU Article 25: “Member States should establish and/or strengthen policies to prevent trafficking in human beings, including measures to discourage and reduce the demand that fosters all forms of exploitation”

ULTIMATE GOAL OF PROJECT Reduction in demand for services of victims of trafficking > reduce the numbers of women and girls being trafficked for sexual exploitation

SEX TRAFFICKING CURRENTLY 23, 632 Victims of Trafficking Identified in EU between 2008-2010. ( Eurostat 2013) 6 out of 10 Victims are trafficked for sexual exploitation ( UN Global Report on Trafficking 2012) Women and girls make up 98% of sex trafficking victims ( ILO, Minimum Estimate of Forced Labour in the World, 2005)

PROJECT AIMS Explore attitudes to human trafficking and characteristics of buyers and potential buyers Explore awareness levels of buyers of the circumstances of the people they are buying Establish the measures identified by the respondents in the study as the most efficient deterrents to purchase of sex

AIMS CONTINUED Strengthen Civil Society’ s capacity to challenge the demand for victims of trafficking Identify promising practices and strategies in reducing demand Target buyers and potential buyers through employers and trade unions- collaborate with unions and employers on pilot demand- reduction training

PROJECT OBJECTIVES Carry out transnational research in all 5 Partner Countries with buyers of sex Produce Policy and Research Paper Produce case study report
