Norms Rules of defining appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Example “A Hindu peasant can be found laying dead of starvation next to a perfectly healthy cow.”

Folkways Norms that lack moral significance. “Removing your hat in church.” We may avoid them, but if we don’t do them we’re not condemned.

Mores (MOR-ays) “Norms that have moral dimensions and that should be followed by members of society.” Able-bodied men who do not work are scorned.

Taboo A rule of behavior, the violation of which calls for strong punishment. “The incest taboo is generally regarded as the only taboo that is present in all societies.”

Law A norm that is formally defined and enforced by officials. “Consciously created.”

Sanctions Rewards and punishments used to encourage people to follow norms. Formal – sanctions imposed by persons given special authority. Informal – can be applied by most members of a group

Values Broad ideas about what is good or desirable shared by people in society. Values FORM the basis of norms.
