Tord.Ekelöf, Uppsala UniversityPartikeldagarna Karlstad 2004-04-01 SweGrid SweGrid is composed of six clusters, each consisting of 100 PC’s and 2 Terabyte disc, which were deployed in November-December 2003 in Göteborg, Linköping, Lund, Stockholm, Umeå and Uppsala and interconnected through 10 Gigabits/s SUNET, using Nordugrid middleware to operate the six clusters as a Grid. An additional 60 Terabyte disc storage has been ordered this week. This morning the ordering of 120 tearbyte robotic tape storage was decided. The acquisition of an additional 60 Terabyte disc is planned.

Tord.Ekelöf, Uppsala UniversityPartikeldagarna Karlstad 2004-04-01 Technical specifications Each node has a 2.8 GHz Intel P4 processor with 800 MHz front side bus, 2 GB RAM and an 80 GB 7200 rpm IDE hard disk. The motherboard is a Supermicro P4SCE. The nodes within each cluster are interconnected by gigabit Ethernet. Each cluster has approximately 2 TB of fibre channel attached disk for short-term storage. The design of the long-term storage systems is not yet finalized. The sites are connected through the 10 Gb/s GigaSunet network. Swegrid is designed mainly for through-put computation, to quickly process large numbers of loosely coupled non-parallel computations. This is in contrast to most of the current national computation resources, like Monolith, Seth and Lucidor, which are designed to run a smaller number of large, parallel jobs.MonolithSeth Lucidor

Tord.Ekelöf, Uppsala UniversityPartikeldagarna Karlstad 2004-04-01 KAW, VR, SNIC, SNAC and STAC The Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) foundation has financed most of the SweGrid computing equipment The Research Council (VR) supported the initial proposal for SweGrid in 2001 and set up a first SweGrid Committee which turned out to be of decisive importance. The Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) is responsible for SweGrid and provides the SweGrid technical crew (7 persons) The Swedish National Allocations Committee (SNAC) has allocated the whole of the SweGrid capacity in 2004 to a large number of different computational projects, among these 1/3 of SweGrid’s capacity 7/24 to ATLAS/ALICE computing The Strategical Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) acts as executive board for SweGrid build-up and operation

Tord.Ekelöf, Uppsala UniversityPartikeldagarna Karlstad 2004-04-01 NorduGrid (NG) NorduGrid started in 2000 as a Nordic collaboration between Particle Physicists to meet the challenges posed by the LHC data analysis project. NorduGrid was financially supported by Nordunet-2 and set up the first small Nordic grid test bed in 2001. The NorduGrid Group has developed the NorduGrid middleware which is currently one of the leading Grid middleware projects in the world. Using this middleware the Nordic countries were the first to contribute to the data analysis work at CERN using the Grid technique.

Tord.Ekelöf, Uppsala UniversityPartikeldagarna Karlstad 2004-04-01 Nordic Data Grid Facility (NDGF) The Nordic Data Grid Facility is a project led by a steering group set up by the Nordic National Research Councils in common (NOS-N) and will consist of coordinated national grid resources in the Nordic Countries – SweGrid is Sweden’s contribution to NDGF. First urgent needs for this Nordic coordination to be operational: agreements between the Nordic National Research Councils to be signed and automatic Authorization and Accounting (A&A) to be put in operation in the Grid. NDGF to deliver report in Autumn 2004 for international evaluation – SweGrid will be used as a test-bed for A&A development

Tord.Ekelöf, Uppsala UniversityPartikeldagarna Karlstad 2004-04-01 ATLAS DC2 on SweGrid Earlier versions of the the ATLAS generation, simulation and analysis software has been installed and tested on the various nodes in January-February 2004. Currently the ATLAS s/w 8 (“final” version for DC2) has been released at CERN on OS Redhat 7.3 and is being prepared by Jakob Langgaard for OS Feodora 1/Redhat 9 as needed for the SweGrid nodes. Will be running on the SweGrid nodes within two weeks. Identical versions on all six nodes needed. Tedious work – in particular linking to the program libraries needs care. One third of SweGrids total compute capacity will be used in May-June around the clock to generate simulated proton- proton collisions in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. From July on Swegrid will be used to analyze the generated data. It will be very useful if people working on ATLAS physics channels use SweGrid extensively in April 2004 so that we get experience with ATLAS 8 before the start of DC2 in May.

Tord.Ekelöf, Uppsala UniversityPartikeldagarna Karlstad 2004-04-01 Other applications AMANDA has already started using SweGrid as well as some projects in quantum chemistry and space research. Others are about to start In total 32 projects in biomedical sciences (e.g. genome research), geophysical science (climate research), material science (solid state and quantum chemistry research), space science (interferometric studies) and high energy physics have been approved by SNAC and will eventually put a heavy load on SweGrid.

Tord.Ekelöf, Uppsala UniversityPartikeldagarna Karlstad 2004-04-01 Concluding remarks The Nordic countries have a lead i grid development. High potential from very successful grid development. Unique opportunity to create a strong Nordic grid federation that will be competitive on the European and World level. The SweGrid project is playing an crucial role for the Nordic collaboration as it is the first major coherent national Grid project with considerable capacity in the Nordic countries. Soon the Grid technology will be widely used by all major Science fields and soon enough also in the Society at large.
