2 Monday, Sept 22 Bell Ringer- Add these vocabulary words to your Unit 2 list: Reconquista – 800-year struggle that Spanish fought to remove Moors from Spain (ended in 1492) Mutiny- a revolt of soldiers or sailors against their leader Northwest Passage – a shortcut across North America to get to Asia; searched for by many explorers (did not exist) Collect Spanish exploration short answer HW

3 French Exploration in Texas French empire in North America was based in Canada. Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle- after explorers realized that the Mississippi River would not provide the Northwest Passage they were looking for, La Salle decided to use the river as the base of a large trading empire. He would build a fort at the mouth of the Mississippi River. In 1684 he sailed from France to build his fort with 4 ships and about 200 people. He had many setbacks……. In 1685, having sailed past the Mississippi River by over 100 miles, they landed in Texas near present-day, Matagorda Bay. There they built Fort St. Louis. READ Pages 72, 73, 74 Discuss: What did you learn? Find interesting? What is the “La Belle”?

5 Closure: Update your timeline: 1685- La Salle lands in Texas and builds Fort St. Louis 1687 – La Salle is murdered by his own men in a mutiny 1688 or 1689 – Karankawas attack Fort St. Louis and wipe it out
