2.  Narcotics are specific drugs that are obtainable only by prescription and are used to relieve pain.  These drugs relieve pain by blocking pain messengers in the brain.  Heroin is a naturally occurring substance that is extracted from the seedpod of the opium poppy.

4.  Taken in orally (mouth), snorted, by needle injection or by smoking.

5.  Narcotics can cause addiction (especially heroin) needing higher doses and more often.  Pharmacists are required to keep records of all sales of these drugs (morphine & codeine)
