Civil War Quizzy 1. During what years did the Civil War take place? 2. List 3 causes of the Civil War as discussed in class. 3. List 2 strengths of the North and 2 for the South at the beginning of the war. 4. What strategies did each side attempt to use? 5. What was one of the outcomes of the battles in the first 2 years? 6. What year is considered the turning point of the war? (I called this potentially the most important year in U.S. History) 7. Why is that year considered the turning point?

1.What is a Radical Republican? From Lincoln’s party, believed war fought over moral issue of slavery, main goal of Reconstruction should be TOTAL restructuring of society to guarantee black people true equality 2.What is a carpetbagger? Northern Republicans that moved to south after the war-often seen as greedy men just trying to profit from Southern misery and gain power 3.What’s a sharecropper? Farmed some portion of the planter’s land-as payment they were promised a “share” of the harvest, also received housing in return Close supervision, harsh punishment, fines, unfair evictions, forced into debt-could not leave til debt paid so trapped on plantation What Antebellum system does “Sharecropping” look/sound like?? 4.What is a scalawag?
