Air Quality Program Environmental Protection & Natural Resources
3
Range Management History ◊ Established in 1998 ◊ One of the more mature programs in the EPNR Department ◊ Develop regulations for local sources/activities ◊ Assert tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction (self governance) Air Quality Program Environmental Protection & Natural Resources
4
◊ Air flow knows no artificial boundary ◊ Small Community population subject to air flow from downtown Phoenix through the Community ◊ Sensitive population of children and elderly Environmental Protection & Natural Resources Air Quality Program Environmental Protection & Natural Resources Why is it important?

Air Quality Program looks for multiple ways to communicate air quality information to Community members Outreach Air Quality Program Environmental Protection & Natural Resources
14
Some current ways the AQP communicates air quality information to Community members: ◊ Air Quality Index (AQI) Communication Flagpoles ◊ Air Quality Website ◊ Air Quality Advisory on SRPMIC Intranet/email Air Quality Program Environmental Protection & Natural Resources

Air Quality Index (AQI) Flagpoles This page was last updated on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 AQI colors EPA has assigned a specific color to each AQI category to make it easier for people to understand quickly whether air pollution is reaching unhealthy levels in their communities. For example, the color orange means that conditions are "unhealthy for sensitive groups," while red means that conditions may be "unhealthy for everyone," and so on. Air Quality Program Environmental Protection & Natural Resources Air Quality Index Levels of Health Concern Numerical Value Meaning Good0-50Air quality is considered satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk. Moderate51-100 Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution. Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups 101-150Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. The general public is not likely to be affected. Unhealthy151-200 Everyone may begin to experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. Very Unhealthy201-300Health alert: everyone may experience more serious health effects. Hazardous> 300Health warnings of emergency conditions. The entire population is more likely to be affected.

Regulatory Activities ◊ Treatment as a State (TAS) or Eligibility Determination status. ◊ SRPMIC received TAS status on October 16, 2008. ◊ Developing components of a Tribal Implementation Plan (TIP) ◊ Enhance air quality compliance and enforcement Air Quality Program Environmental Protection & Natural Resources
23
Current Activities ◊ Continue public education and awareness activities to encourage Community Members to participate in addressing air quality issues ◊ Strengthen regulatory capabilities ◊ Develop new regulations/ordinances and active involvement in enforcement ◊ Perform multimedia, including air issues compliance inspections Air Quality Program Environmental Protection & Natural Resources
