2 DO NOW Pull out a blank piece of paper For the next 5 minutes, write as much as you can about the body systems. What do they do? How do some of them work closely together to function? MUST write at least 10 lines for credit

3 DO NOW Join up with a partner and write down 3 facts about the body systems. Facts should be drawn from the writings.

4 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY Read Chapter 30.2 Complete 3/2/1 Journal Entry

5 HOMEWORK Create a log of everything you intake for 24 hours and the approximate amounts 24 hours from now, or any 24 hour period BEFORE class on Monday. Next class, we will analyze some of the students diets using internet software

6 EXAMPLE Breakfast 2 eggs scrambled 1 slice of toast 1 cup of OJ 10 grapes

7 ENERGY Food contains energy, used by the cells by what is called ATP The energy available in food can be measured by burning it! The heat that is created can be measured in “Calories” Calorie- the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of gram of water by 1 degree C 1 Calorie = 1000 calories

8 NECESSARY NUTRIENTS Water Carbohydrates Complex carbs contain fiber which can reduce the risk of heart disease Fats Proteins Vitamins Minerals

9 VITAMINS Organic compounds that the body needs in very small doses Important for growth, energy and metabolism

10 MINERALS Important Minerals include Calcium Iron Potassium Necessary for muscle contraction

11 CALORIC VALUES Fat – 9 Calories / gram Carbs – 4 Calories / gram Proteins – 4 Calories / gram One Serving of a particular food contains 16 grams of Carbs, 2 grams of proteins and 10 grams of fat. How many Calories? How many calories?
