HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: -On your Bellwork Sheet write “Study for Quiz” -Quiz will be over Levels of Organization and Basic Chemistry.
2
REMINDERS Projects Due tomorrow Notecards Due Wednesday Quiz Friday Test next Monday
3
Lipids are molecules that are not soluble in water. They are nonpolar and hydrophobic.
4
The three categories of lipids include: Fats Oils Waxes
5
Lipids can be used to: Store energy. Contain the most energy per gram of any biomolecule. (9 Cal/gram) To form biological membranes and waterproof coverings.
6
Many lipids are formed when a glycerol molecule combines with compounds called fatty acids.
7
Lipids contain only carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O).
8
Energy in Food Burning carbohydrates – watch and write down your observations Burning carbohydrates Burning lipids – take notes and write down any observations Burning lipids Calories in food – take notes…MAKE SURE you write down how many calories per gram in each biomolecule AND the daily recommended allowance Calories in food

Lipids Structure: Functions: Monomer:Polymer: Chain shaped A backbone and 3 tails Elements: C, H, O Source for long term energy Primary component of the cell membrane waxy coating on the top of leaves (cuticle). Good to know: Saturated fats: contain single bonds Unsaturated fats: contain double bonds Fatty acids Triglyceride (lipid)
10
Carbohydrate Structure:Functions: Monomer:Polymer: Circle or ring shaped Create a 1:2:1 ratio Elements: C, H, O Main source of immediate energy Good to know: Often known as simple (monomers) and complex (polymers) Monosaccharide Examples: glucose, sucrose Polysaccharide Examples: starch, cellulose
11
As always, summarize what you have learned about carbohydrates and lipids in 30 words. In your summary, you must use the words: carbohydrates lipids energy
