TEKS Objective 3) Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking. The student solves problems involving proportional relationships. The student is expected to: (A) use ratios to describe proportional situations; (B) represent ratios and percents with concrete models, fractions, and decimals; and (C) use ratios to make predictions in proportional situations.
3
Purpose The purpose of the lesson is allowing the students to solve problems involving proportional relationships. The learner will use ratios to describe proportional situations The learner will represent ratios and percents with concrete models, fractions, and decimals.
4
Understanding Rational Numbers and Proportions 6-8In this lesson, students use real-world models to develop an understanding of fractions, decimals, unit rates, proportions, and problem solving. Number & Operation s
5
Instruction Introduce lesson by prompting questions Give definition of percent and ratio Have students tell why learning about percents and ratios is relevant Give an example of a percent and a ratio. Activity – Percent benchmark- This activity allow students to use a 1 inch strip of paper to model percents. Fold a 1 inch strip of paper in half. One half of the strip represents 50%.
6
Guided Practice What is the percent for the shaded amount?
7
Independent Practice Write the ratio as a percent. 4/5, 11/100, 6/25 and 4/50 Write the percent as a decimal and as a ratio in simplest form 20%, 45%, and 20.5%
8
Conclusion The students learned how to change percents to decimals and decimals to percents. By modeling percents with the 1 inch strips the students enjoyed the activity.
