Broadwater Department Edexcel History Paper 2 Paper Two contains questions on the Depth Studies. Depression and the New Deal: the USA 1929-41 The World at War 1938-45
3
Broadwater Department What is being assessed? Paper 2 assesses historical knowledge of the two Depth Studies. You will need the knowledge to make sense of the sources by placing them into their historical context. You will need historical knowledge to answer the 15 mark interpretation task.
4
Broadwater Department What is being assessed? Paper 2 assesses you ability to think like an historian to use historical sources to research and communicate about the past. There will be five historical sources and four questions that enable you to show what you have learnt and what you can do.
5
Broadwater Department What will the sources like? There will be five historical sources. One will be a picture or photograph. One will be a graph or diagram. Three will be written. The three written sources will contain different interpretations of the past.
6
Broadwater Department Question a) Carries 4 marks. It has two parts: information finding for 2 marks, ie. What can you learn from Source A about ….? Making inferences or judgements about the source, by spotting facts, opinions or omissions, ie. The source also suggests that …
7
Broadwater Department Question b) Carries 6 marks. You have to compare three sources. This is because historians compare sources for similarity and difference. To what extent does Source C support the evidence of Sources A and B about the effects of the Blitz. Make sure you focus on the “topic” you are asked to compare. State what Source C says about the “topic”. Compare this with what A and then C say. Remember to compare N(ature), O(rigin) and P(urpose) of the sources as a part of your answer.
8
Broadwater Department Question c) Carries 8 marks. To will have to comment on the usefulness of two sources. How useful are sources D and E as evidence of the impact of Blitzkrieg? You must compare content/nature, author, when and why it was produced. Remember to focus on the actual question, which is about “usefulness” (and limitations) for a particular task.
9
Broadwater Department Question d) Carries 12 marks. You are asked if agree or disagree with an historical interpretation. Source E suggests that, by 1938, the New Deal had failed. Use the sources, as well as you own knowledge to say if you agree with this interpretation?
10
Broadwater Department Question d) Source E suggests that, by 1938, the New Deal had failed. Use the sources, as well as you own knowledge to say if you agree with this interpretation. You will need to plan for this answer. Write out facts and the sources that agree. Write out facts and the sources that disagree.
11
Broadwater Department Question d) You will need to plan for this answer. Having written out facts and the sources that agree and that disagree, Write an introduction that incorporates both interpretations. “By 1938 the New Deal has both succeeded and failed in achieving its aims.”
12
Broadwater Department Question d) By 1938 the New Deal has both succeeded and failed in achieving its aims. You must then use the sources as well as your own knowledge to write about: The way in which the New Deal had succeeded, and The ways in which the New Deal had failed. You will have had to decide what success and failure meant for the New Deal!
13
Broadwater Department Question d) Back to the Plan! What did success mean for the New Deal? Remember: two sides are needed! Success was solving the social effects of and bringing about an end to the Depression. So, “The New Deal succeeded in solving the social effects, but it did not succeed in ending the Depression. The Depression ended because of the Second World War.” Now you have written your introduction – the road map for your answer.
14
Broadwater Department Question d) The New Deal succeeded in solving the social effects, but it did not succeed in ending the Depression. The Depression ended because of the Second World War. After you have written your introduction – the road map for your answer. Write a section explaining how the New Deal overcame the social effects of the Depression, using the “sources as well as your own knowledge”. This is stated in the question. Write a section explaining that the New Deal did not end the Depression, that it was the outbreak of war. Remember to use the sources as well as your own knowledge! Finally, write an conclusion that matches your introduction.
15
Broadwater Department Summary of the Questions A) Comprehension of a source: find specific information and extrapolate. B) Comparison of three sources: find specific information, extrapolate, compare, consider NOP and conclude. C) Usefulness of sources: find specific information, compare, consider NOP and conclude. D) Synthesis: use your analysis of the sources, as well as your own information to provide a structured, well reasoned and balanced judgement about the past.
16
Broadwater Department Final Words and the End The last bit of teaching … The end of the course … All over by 11 o’clock … MAKE SURE YOU ANSWER ALL OF THE QUESTIONS: 5O MINS PER QUESTION. MAKE SURE YOU ANSWER THE ACTUAL QUESTION!
17
