J. Lyndal Hughes is a Northwest ISD Title 1 campus: More than 28% of our students are considered low income. We receive federal funds to assist all students. Title 1 funds are flexible and are used for additional personnel, professional development, improve curriculum, enhance parental involvement, extend learning time for students, and provide other activities that are tied to student achievement. The theme this year was voted upon by staff and students last spring. We want to empower students to be responsible, respectful, problem solvers, and to take responsible risks so they can learn from their failures. We EMPOWER the Future

Our campus focus for this year is in math. We have seen a decline in scores across the campus. Students are struggling with basic math facts and how to apply these facts to word problems. Campus incentive program for facts Campus Focus-Math

State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness Given in grades 3-5 5 th grade reading SSI for 2015 New math standards (TEKS) More difficult than previous test because it will require higher level thinking and multiple step problems. Builds on previously learned knowledge. STAAR

Goal 98% - Last year was 96.8% Our attendance counts towards our state accountability rating Students can not learn if they are not in school. Making up work at home does not make up for the teacher’s instruction. School district get money when students are in school. If NISD could improve attendance by 1% it would save the district 1 million dollars. Attendance

School hours – 7:45-2:45 The doors to the school open at 7:20. Breakfast is served from 7:20-7:35 Students should be in seats and ready to learn by 7:45 Tardies

Students daily and 6-week grades can be viewed online at any time. Attendance is also available online. Can set up notifications Please pick up directions. Letter with login information was sent home last week. We can reprint it for you if needed. Internet Grade Viewing

We always need help with making copies, laminating, organizing books, etc. We have a group called “Hawk Helpers” that meets on Tuesdays-Friday. PTA helps train volunteers. Thursday, Sept. 11 th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in library will be the volunteer training. Must complete a background check to be able to volunteer or be a chaperone. (VIPS) Parent Volunteers

We have an active PTA that provides multiple events for our families to attend such as the tailgate party last week, carnivals, talent show, family fun nights, etc. The PTA purchases a t-shirt for every child on campus. Membership is $10.00 and $20.00 for a family of four. All PTA events for the year are free with membership. If you are interested in helping with PTA, please contact Dana Briscoe. Hughes PTA

Each six weeks a new book is introduced to the entire school. The book centers around a character trait. Mrs. Briggs, the school counselor, does character building lessons for that character trait. Students respond to the books using a Reader’s Response format and a response is selected for each grade level to display in the hallway. Principal’s Book of the Month

Making sure my child is rested and prepared for school each day. Make sure your child is at school and on time for school. Knowing how your child is doing by communicating with the teacher by checking your child’s folder, email, in person or by phone. Monitor your child’s homework and make sure study time is in a quiet place. Limit TV viewing and read together daily. Be an active participant in your child’s education. How you can help your child!

Students will start the day in their homeroom teacher’s classroom. Specials – 9:50 to 10:45 Switch Classes - 11:10 Lunch – 12:30 to 1:00 Recess – 1:00 to 1:30 Schedule

Students are asked to enter the cafeteria silently and not talk until after they have taken a seat with their lunch. This ensures that the cafeteria ladies can hear their lunch selections in the line. The first five minutes of lunch is our silent time. This allows our social butterflies to eat their lunch. Parents are ONLY allowed to sit with their own kids! You may not bring lunch for another student. Lunch

Personal Goal Sheets Small group instruction based on needs Students practice concepts using books at their reading level. Students perfect writing based on their specific needs, levels, and goals. Students share out their thinking at the end of each work period. Reader’s & Writer’s Workshop

3 rd Year for the Million Word Challenge To earn credit for a book, the book must at the student’s “just right” reading level! Fourth Grade students are expected to read 25 books! Read at home and school Use Reading Logs Our Million Word Kickoff is September 12 th at 2:00 Awards will be given at the 6 Weeks Award s assemblies to students that have met their goal for the grading period Celebration Day on June 2 nd on campus with Game Truck, DJ, Splash Party, KONA Ice, etc. Super fun day! Why Should My Child Read?

Concepts are introduced Students explore a variety of ways to solve problems through games and practice within small groups, partners, or as individuals. Students share out their thinking showing a variety of complexity. As a campus, we need to work on facts-we need your help with math facts at home too Math Workshop

Homework may be assigned throughout the week. Spelling words will be on our websites and on the weekly newsletter. Students should read at least 20 minutes every night. Math- Practice and repetition is very important. We will be using Xtramath & Studyladder. Homework
