2 Student Success Act of 2012 Task Group (Regulatory Changes) GOAL: To identify the first steps to implement the 22 recommendations; 8 focus areas of the SSTF: 1.Increase college and career readiness (AA, SS) 2.Strengthen support for entering students (SS, AA, AS) 3.Incentivize successful student behaviors (SS, AA, AS) 4.Align course offerings to meet student needs (AA, SS) 5.Improve education of basic skills students (SS, AA) 6.Revitalize and re-envision professional development (SS, AA, AS) 7.Enable efficient statewide leadership and increase coordination among colleges (SS, AA, AS) 8.Align resources with student success recommendations (SS, AA) SS (Student Services)AA (Academic Affairs)AS (Administrative Services)

3 Student Success Act of 2012 Task Group (Regulatory Changes ) Chancellor’s Office recommends addressing the following recommendations first: – Recommendation 2.2 (mandated services) – Recommendation 3.2 (BOGFW conditions) – Recommendation 8.2 (Student Support Initiative)

4 Student Success Act of 2012 Task Group MPC Student Services Task Group plans to focus on the following: – Recommendation 2.2: Require all incoming community college students to: participate in diagnostic assessment orientation develop an education plan (drives course offerings) – Recommendation 2.5 : Encourage students to declare a program of study upon admission, intervene if a declaration is not made by the end of their second term, and require declaration by the end of their term in order to maintain enrollment priority. – Recommendation 3.1 : The Community Colleges will adopt system-wide enrollment priorities that:… encourage students to identify their educational objective and follow a prescribed path most likely to lead to success… – Recommendation 3.2: Require students receiving BOG Fee waivers to meet various conditions and requirements, as specified below. Identify a degree, certificate, transfer or career advancement goals; Meet institutional satisfactory progress standards to be eligible for fee waiver renewals; and Have a transcript that reflects no more than 110 units, excluding basic skills and ESL courses – Recommendation 3.4: Community Colleges will require student to begin addressing basic skills needs in their first year and will provide resources and options for them to attain competencies needed to succeed in college-level work as part of their education plan.

11 CCCAA Proposed Athletic Eligibility Changes effective July 1, 2013 Prior to the beginning of the semester of the 2 nd season of sport, the student athlete must have accumulated 24 units at a 2.25 GPA with 18/24 satisfying Qualifying Academic Units requirements as indicated in Bylaw 1.6.1.B.

12 Admissions & Records Update Repeatability – Limits three enrollments for substandard grades received in non-repeatable courses. – No repeats allowed (in non-repeatable courses) in which satisfactory grades (C or better) are received. The California Dream Act (AB130/131) – State financial aid and educational services now available to AB 540 students. – AB 540: (student exempt from paying non-resident fees) attended CA high school for at least three years; graduated from CA high school, received GED or passed CHSPE; Enrolled in CA community college.

13 Financial Aid Update Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) o New federal regulation that limits Pell grant to the equivalent of 12 full time semesters or 600% LEU for your entire academic career. High School Diploma, GED requirements o New federal regulation requiring high school diploma or GED to receive federal financial aid. o Effective July 1, 2012, students can no longer qualify for federal financial aid by passing the Ability to Benefit Test (ATB) or completing 6 Degree Applicable Units. Undeclared Major not eligible o Financial aid eligibility only to students with a declared major. New Verification Requirements o Submit tax transcripts from the IRS or use the IRS Data retrieval link provided on the FAFSA application. We no longer accept copies of tax returns. o Verify wages even if they were not required to file taxes. We can accept W2s, tax transcripts stating student/spouse/parent did not file and/or self- certification on the verification worksheet.

14 BE AWARE OF DATES: February 17: Last Date to drop semester-length course without grade of record February 19: Census Date May 8: Last Day to drop semester length course and receive “W” June 8: Commencement Grades are due 48 hours after final
