Childhood A new approach to raising children developed in the 1780s. It emphasized childhood as a separate stage of development. This caused toys and games to become more popular. This is a homemade doll from Northfield, MA

Women in Post-Colonial America Married women were under complete legal control of their husband. Republican Motherhood Idea that a woman’s role in the Republic is to raise her children with Democratic Ideals and to make them contributing members of society. Drawn to the reform movements that begin to develop.

Second Great Awakening In 1790 only 5% of Americans were officially affiliated with a Church. Begins in Kentucky and Tennessee in the 1790s Characterized by: Itinerant preachers: rode a circuit of rural areas with no churches Revivals Focus on personal salvation Everyone in equal before God Perfectionism and millennialism Focused on the perfection of society

Slavery Most slaves worked as field hands Others worked as artisans or domestic servants Overseer kept the slaves in line Usually hired help The South was one of the richest areas in the world Most of that wealth from slaves

Slave Culture Family Fear of family being sold Extended family became important Village approach to raising children Many were sold away from families Religion Was encouraged by whites…but only under certain conditions. Secret religion developed Focused on the Exodus story and liberation by God.
