Both point out the special relationship between things or events. Provides a logical method of developing a topic in writing.

Chronological sequence—do not assume that because one event follows another in time that the first event caused the second to occur. 2. Coincidence—do not assume that because one thing occurred, it is patterned after or related to some other event.

Topic sentence should state why certain causes and effects are being explored. Focuses on causes and effects. Transitional expressions emphasize cause and effect relationships. Conclusion should flow from essay’s main topic.
