Introduction to Satellites and Space Systems 5 This lecture class is to provide to engineering & science students a systems engineering approach to Space Systems and overview of university type satellites design requirements and design methods. SSE 120 Class Policies

Assumptions of students Students are proficient at using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint have high school algebra and geometry. 6 Lectures & Labs Each session is planned for two lectures/week at ~60 minutes each. For each hour in class, students are expected to study three hours outside Lab classes will be on every other Friday at same time Additional lab work is expected other than on lab days SSE 120 Class Policies

Systems engineering approach to a space mission. Space mission components Types of space experiments using balloons, low altitude rockets, super pressure balloons and sounding rockets. Class format This class is available via slides and GoToWebinar recorded sessions on the website: TBD. This course be offered live over GoToWebinar. 10 Class Policies SSE 120 Short Quizzes Short quizzes will be are part of this course. These quizzes will be given Tuesday as announced at the beginning of class. The quizzes will be ten minutes and monitored by the class assistant. Reviews for the quiz will be provided via e-mail on Friday of each week with an outline of the important material to study. Quizzes will be returned within one week and a key will be made available on the class website. Exams As a normal part of this course, there are two midterm exams and a final exam. The midterm exams should be completed with one hour and the final exam should be completed in two hours.

Homework There will be periodic homework assignments. Homework will be graded by the class assistant and returned within one week. Homework assigned the previous week will be due at the beginning of class on Tuesday. 11 Class Policies SSE 120 Homework format All homework will be done on computer printer paper printed by a computer printer. All homework will have the following. Multiple pages stapled in the upper left hand corner. Pages folded once lengthwise Following on the front page upper right hand corner Name Class Date Assignment # The same on the back page, upper right hand corner Name on the upper right hand corner of each page Final answers for problems underlined or boxed Homework grading 10% proper format 10% neatness 80% correct solution

Cooperative Effort Cooperative work effort is encouraged. If you can find someone to cooperatively discuss this material, it would greatly enhance your retention of the material. Suggested performance criteria to be a good student 14 Class Policies SSE 120 Be prepared to ask questions on reading material Read assigned material before coming to class Start on homework as soon as possible (gives you time to ask questions, before HW is due) Get plenty of rest so you can be alert in class Take notes in class Keep a loose leaf binder for material passed out in class
