NA-MIC National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org Measuring Alcohol and Stress Interactions with Structural and Perfusion MRI Chris Wyatt External Collaboration

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org Introduction Our goal is to use MRI to examine the effects of chronic alcohol self-administration on brain structure and function in monkeys. Team –Jim Daunais, Bob Kraft (WFUHS) –Xiaoxing Li, Vidya Rajagopalan, Chris Wyatt (VT) –Andriy Fedorov, Killian Pohl, Sandy Wells (NA-MIC)

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org Experimental Design Male vervet monkeys were chosen based on their initial cortisol response to novelty. Classified as: –high cortisol response (HC) –low cortisol response (LC) Groups then divided into EtOH or controls Classic 2 X 2 design: HC/controlLC/control HC/EtOHLC/EtOH

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org Experimental Protocol Training Water induction 0.5 g/kg induction 1.0 g/kg induction 1.5 g/kg induction 22 hour self- administration (2 drinks) (4 drinks)(6 drinks) Baseline structural and MRS Post-induction structural, MRS and perfusion Cynomolgus Monkey At The Panel (Courtesy Dr. Kathleen Grant, OHSU) Custom Head Coil Example T1w Image

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org NA-MIC Related Goal Implement and validate algorithms for: Size comparison of human, rhesus, and cynomolgus brain. brain extraction white-gray matter segmentation subcortical structure segmentation

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org Progress Report Version 1 of Vervet atlas complete Initial workflow implemented, documented in a tutorial Subcortical structures well segmented, issues with image artifacts and cortical segmentation All data is collected N = 10 subjects

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org Current Efforts Working on a Slicer only workflow to help with dissemination –BRAINSFit Module replacement for FSL-flirt Working on an improved atlas Segmenting second time point data Analysis of results Resubmission –continue structural –add functional imaging
