Time Management and Organization CLC Workshop

Identify What are the specific issues that prevent you from completing work? Motivation Unrealistic expectations Forgetting criteria or due dates Procrastination Lack of interest What are you currently doing to compensate? What is working? What’s not working?

Activity Break into groups, discuss, and compile: 3 most common reasons people struggle with time management and organization 3 things you’ve tried that didn’t work 3 things you’ve tried that were successful

Understand Very few people are naturally organized. To be organized is to want to be organized – you must choose to do so and work extremely hard at it. The payoff comes down the line. You put in work upfront so that you can complete assignments more efficiently later and enjoy your leisure time without worrying. You will probably not enjoy putting in work upfront, especially if it is something you haven’t done before. That’s normal – push through and do it anyway.

Take Action So now you’ve identified your issues and decided that you want to put in the work. What tools are at your disposal? Weekly and daily assignment lists Know what you need to accomplish in the next 5-7 days. Some things will take an hour, some will take 8 hours, and they are all due on different days. What order should you complete them in? List them in that order. If a longer assignment will need to be worked on in multiple chunks, put it in your list multiple times. Cross things off as you go. You’ll feel satisfied with your progress and visualize exactly what is left.

Take Action, continued. Keep an up-to-date calendar or planner (electronic is fine). You know when assignments are due and what days you will work on them. But a day is 24 hours, and you need to pick when you will complete that work. When you go to bed each night, have a plan for the following day that takes you from waking up to sleeping. Assuming you’ll be awake 16 hours, spend 3-4 hours in class, 2-3 hours eating, you’re left with at least 9 hours. Schedule work in hour blocks you know you are most productive (the hour between classes, early in the morning, etc.). To keep your sanity, schedule in “fun” times. Don’t let friends/family/sports interrupt your scheduled work times.

Take Action, continued. Keep class materials sorted by course. Don’t use the same notebook for multiple classes. Keep all notes, graded assignments, study guides, etc. together. Get a folder for loose papers. You will need this information to study from at some point. Grab the appropriate stack of materials whenever you have scheduled time to work. Check Canvas and Becker email at least once per day. Nothing will break your plan like a new assignment or due date that you were unaware of. Be prepared, and be fluid when changes need to be made.

Take Action, continued. There are several technology tools designed to help keep you on track: The Homework App - Your Class Assignment & Timetable Schedule Planner Google Calendar 30/30 - time management app

Activity Today is Sunday. You have the following assignments for the next week. Estimate the time required to complete each assignment. What would you work on each day and for how long? English research essay, 3 pages. Due Saturday. Algebra homework, 10 questions. Due Wednesday. Sociology textbook reading, 70 pages. Due Tuesday. Sociology quiz on reading. In class Thursday. Physics lab report, 5 pages. Due Friday FYE resume assignment. Due Tuesday. FYE summer reading quiz. In class Wednesday.

Sample Response

Benefits You will accomplish tasks on time with a greater level of detail than before. You’ll be less stressed, knowing that you have prepared for all of your classes. You’ll get more out of your education. College is about more than the grade you earned in a course – it’s about the knowledge you carry out of it.
