10 Semicolon Rule 1: Link two independent clauses with no connecting words I am going home; I intend to stay there. It rained heavily last night; our basement flooded. The drive home was exhausting; they decided to pull over and stay at a hotel.

11 Semicolon Rule 2: Join two independent clauses together with one of the following conjunctive adverbs: however, moreover, therefore, consequently, otherwise, nevertheless, thus… I am going home; moreover, I intend to stay there. It rained heavily during the night; however, our basement did not flood.
