How to evaluate sources? Skills Development Top Tips When you examine sources, think about the following points: O What does the source definitely tell me? O What obvious information does it give? O What does the source suggest ? O What can I read between the lines ? O What are the hidden messages ? Follow the check points 1- 5

Skills Development What does the source tell us? Is the source useful to your enquiry? Is it full of facts or is it based on opinion ? What doesn’t the source tell us? Has it left out important information? Check 1: What?

Skills Development Who produced it? Are they likely to be trustworthy ? Was the author of the source there at the time (an eye-witness)? Remember - The authors or producers of a source often deliberately include strong hidden messages. Check 2: Who?

Skills Development Check 3: When? When was the source produced ? How does this affect its usefulness and the potential reliability of the source?

Skills Development Check 4: Why? Why was the source produced? Does it aim to produce a fair and accurate account of the event or person it is referring to? Is it trying to influence a particular group of people?

Skills Development Check 5: Reliability How reliable do you think the source is? You must give a reason for your opinion.
