Overview of ADHD ADHD = Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Usually detected at a young age Found in kids who do not pay close attention in class Do not pay attention when spoken too

Specific Type: Inattentive ADHD Most common type found in schools Easily distracted Having short attention spans to a task that is not interesting, or is hard Daydreams when others are talking to him/her A person who cannot find anything that they have just put down somewhere A person who is always late Is easily bored

Incidence of ADHD Affects 3-5% of the worlds population Typically present during childhood Twice as common in boys as in girls Most develop coping skills to compensate for the disorder as they mature

Causes of ADHD A specific cause of ADHD is not known. Researchers and doctors feel it has a strong genetic component. Studies show 75% of cases are genetic

Special Considerations & Safety No activities should be avoided -positive correlation between physical activity and improved grades for students with ADHD

Teaching Strategies Repeat instructions Specifically get attention of student Keep the class moving with little to no down time.
