NZVNA Code of conduct: Not open to criticism regarding conduct at work. Not act or imply they are a veterinarian. Report and hand over first aid cases ASAP. Highest standards of nursing care and conduct. Carry out a veterinarian’s orders intelligently & loyally. Maintain confidentiality. Ensure client is aware of the requirements for medication. Supply the most appropriate, economical and effective product (not most profitable). Understand and abide by, all Acts and Regulations affecting them professionally. No illegal or unethical conduct.

Disciplinary process of a Vet Nurse This is an employment matter. Can be immediate dismissal for serious transgressions. Usual to receive 3 warnings before dismissal. If facing disciplinary issues and you are a NZVNA member it is a good idea to contact them – even if you are at fault.

Disciplinary process of a Vet Minor issues may be dealt with by a senior Vet or practice manager ie as an employment issue. Otherwise under the Veterinarians Act 2005. Anyone can lay a complaint client. vet nurse. colleague. member of the public.

Proof of negligence: Must establish: there was a duty of care. »Animal was in care of the Vet. a breach in duty of care. »A failure to act with the standards of being a reasonably competent veterinarian. this breach caused damage. »Some injury or negative consequence to the animal or owner.

Vet mistreats animals: 1.Talk to Vet involved. 2.Talk to another vet (more senior if possible) in the practice. 3.Talk to NZVNA if a member. 4.Go to Vet Council. Possible consequences: May start to hide it from you. May affect working relationship. Employment issues possible.
